Because of its closeness, I used to go to Coonskin Park, which has a great pool facility with grassy & shady areas for folks who want to lounge on something other than blazing hot, hard concrete. However, thanks to certain beaurecratic entities, it was decided to change the Park's entry gate to the other side of the park area. Now I have to drive 3-4 times as far just to enter the park.
So I started going instead to the Kanawha City community pool, which is about 1.5 miles away with just a quick trip across the KC bridge. Besides having the outdoor pool, the KC community center complex is a great facility with an indoor hardwood basketball court, several different exercise rooms with equipment such as treadmills, stationary bikes, etc, an outdoor tennis courts area, full shower room facilities with changing stalls & restrooms (also accessible to the pool) & much more. The community pool has 3 swim areas that are fun, whether you're a child or a non-swimming adult up to folks who are good swimmers or part fish (like me)! 😉 There's a shallow 2' deep area, a middle section that runs from a 3' deep end to a 5' deep end, and a 8'+ deep area that used to be the diving area, before the diving board was removed due to "liability issues" (it only takes a few "bad apples" etc etc). These 3 areas are designated by ropes & floats & it's basically up to the swimmer (or their parents) to choose which area to use.
Be forewarned however...although there are plenty of "lifeguards" (with "official" metal whistles!) inside the fenced pool area, they all look to be teenagers (summer jobs, I remember well...) & perhaps aren't quite as focused/attentive as they NEED to be. Not everyone who's drowning (or are too close to...) screams, thrashes in the water, & in general makes a loud commotion...like in the movies... many victims just quietly & quickly go under till it's too late! Parents MUST keep a close eye on their children while they're in the water, AND adults need to know & respect their own swimming abilities & limitations.
All in all, this is a great pool. I think normally, in the past, there has been an admission fee, but this summer (2022) pool visits are free. It opens around 12N till 6p(?) & on weekdays doesn't really get too busy till about 1:30-2p but then starts to clear out again around 4:30-5p. We were told weekends are more crowded... naturally. You may have to ask a lifeguard for a pool lounge chair & bring plenty of SPF 50+ sunscreen, a big shade hat, & dark sunglasses because there is absolutely NO shade to be had. But the plus side to that lack of shade is the pool heats up earlier in the season & stays comfortably warm but NOT bath water temps!😝
I do recommend this pool & I'm becoming a real "regular" on weekdays. Swimming is a great low impact, all muscle groups, exercise that you don't even have to "break a sweat" to do...that's definitely my style! Go see for yourself...swim safe, have fun, & enjoy the water!

Great family oriented atmosphere. My two kids enjoyed playing in the pool. It was not overly crowded. Lots of different things to do here. There is a nice workout room, lots of tennis courts. Best part is that it's free!

The facility is always clean and in good standing. I mostly go there to lift our play basket ball. The inside court is nice except it get a little dusty since kids play on it with their outside shoes. Overall nice and clean free center.
